The Federal VA recently launched a new requirement for students receiving the Post 9/11 GI Bill to verify their enrollment. Here are some answers to some Frequently Asked Questions to help you better understand what this means for you as a student.
What are my responsibilities as a student?
Verify that you are still enrolled in the same courses that we certified to the VA at the end of each month. Verification to the VA is not about attendance and is only about your enrollment in courses.
How do I verify enrollment?
Students now have the option to verify enrollment via text message or email. The VA strongly recommends using text or email, or you can call the GI Bill hotline (1-888-442-4551) to verify enrollment. If you do not enroll in text messaging verification, you will be automatically enrolled in email verification. Important: You will not receive information about enrolling until we certify your enrollment to the VA. We are still completing Spring certifications and will be in the coming weeks.
When do I verify my enrollment?
On the last day of each month. The first time you will verify your enrollment is January 31, 2022.
I received a text from the VA that looks like spam. Is it legit?
The VA is beginning to send out texts so you can opt-in to text messaging verification. If you reply “YES” to opt-in to text message verification, you will receive a text confirming you have opted in. If you reply “NO” or cannot receive texts, you will be automatically enrolled in email verification. After January 15, 2022 the number you should be receiving texts from is (855) 933-1416. Prior to January 15, you may have received a text from a number with area code (202). Reminder: You will not be contacted until we have certified you to the VA.
What happens if I do not verify my enrollment?
Your housing stipend will be held by the VA until you verify enrollment.
What contact information is the VA using to send the enrollment verification information?
The VA should be using the contact information that you used when you applied for the Post 9/11 GI Bill. You may need to update your email and phone number with the VA.
Who do I contact if I need to change my contact information?
The GI Bill Hotline (1-888-442-4551)
What if I am planning to change my enrollment?
Talk to us first so we can discuss how an enrollment change may affect your benefits.
