Military Community Advocates (MCA)

The National Veterans Leadership Foundation started the Military Community Advocate program to help create a more supportive campus environment for military-connected students. Military Community Advocates (MCAs) are student leaders committed to supporting military-connected students through various programs, projects, and events they implement across campus. Through their efforts, MCAs help enrich the higher education experience for military-connected students and contribute to universities recognizing and celebrating the achievements of those who served our country.

What do MCA’s do?

The UW Military Community Advocate (MCA) program places military-connected students in key units on campus to increase the sense of belonging among the military-connected student community.

Each MCA serves for one year. Their responsibilities include:

  • Working 4-6 hours per week on their event, project, or program.
  • Developing and implementing innovative programs or events to serve, engage, and support military-connected students.

Why become an MCA?

As an MCA students gain both personal achievements and skills as well as impact and improve their campus environment. Serving as an MCA can provide valuable resume-building experiences and open doors to networking across campus. MCAs also receive a service scholarship and project funding throughout their year-long commitment. The MCA program is a new program at UW-Madison, but MCAs at campuses nationwide have improved campus policies on military service, created suicide prevention programs, expanded veteran recruiting, established mentoring initiatives, organized community-building events, and sponsored trauma-informed writing projects.

Want to become an MCA?

We place MCAs in various offices, departments, and schools/colleges across campus. If you are interested in becoming an MCA, or if you are an office on campus interested in hosting an MCA, please email veterans@wisc.edu.
