Enrollment Verification Requirement for Students Receiving Federal Benefits

Students receiving federal benefits need to be aware of additional responsibilities to maintain their benefits. Primarily, students receiving Chapter 33 Post 9/11 GI Bill® or Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill® Select Reserve benefits must follow monthly enrollment verification requirements. Failure to submit your enrollment verification may result in the delay or withholding of some or all of your benefit payments.

VA Education recently made significant changes to the monthly enrollment verification process. Understanding the following information about enrollment verification will help you prepare to receive benefits.

Who needs to submit enrollment verifications?

You must submit an enrollment verification if you are a student using:

  • Post 9/11 GI Bill®
  • Montgomery GI Bill® Select Reserve

What are my responsibilities as a student?

Verify that you are still enrolled in the same number of credits that we certified to the VA at the end of each month. Verification to the VA is not about attendance and is only about your enrollment in courses.

When do I verify my enrollment?

On the last day of each month. For the fall term, the first time you will verify your enrollment is September 30, 2024.

How do I verify enrollment?

For Post 9/11 GI Bill ® or Montgomery GI Bill ® benefits, you can verify your enrollment for school or training on VA.gov. For Post 9/11 GI Bill®, you have the option to verify online using Login.gov or ID.me, or by text, email, or phone. For Montgomery GI Bill®, VA offers an online option using Login.gov or ID.me. This summer they also offered an automated phone option for verification during their system transitions. It is unclear if that phone option will continue to be accessible, so students are encouraged to set up an online account if possible.

What happens if I do not verify my enrollment?

Your housing stipend will be held by the VA until you verify enrollment.
