United States Army
Drafted out of UW grad school in January 1969 and, after one year of training, ended up spending all of 1970 as an infantry sergeant in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. Exited Vietnam and the army in December and four weeks later was doing my student teaching in a Madison middle school. Regarding the draft, we all made difficult choices after endless discussion: my roommate at UW went to Canada; I certainly made moral compromises; I most admired Mohammed Ali’s choice.
I am a retired educator living blissfully in Tacoma WA close to that “other” UW
