Veteran Readiness and Employment

What is Veteran Readiness and Employment?

Veterans Readiness & Employment (VR&E or Chapter 31) can help veterans find meaningful, sustainable careers and connect you with training or other opportunities to help you reach your employment goals. This program was formerly called Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment. Veterans and service members typically need a service-connected disability rating of at least 20% to be found eligible.

Services received through VR&E may include:

  • A complete evaluation to determine your abilities, skills, and interests for employment
  • Professional or vocational counseling and rehabilitation planning for employment services
  • Post-secondary education and training at a college, vocational, technical, or business school

You can apply for VR&E if you are eligible for Post 9/11 GI Bill® and can elect to receive the monthly housing stipend at the GI Bill® rate.

If you’re a Veteran released from active duty before January 1, 2013, you’re eligible for VR&E benefits and services within a 12-year period. If you are a Veteran or Service member with a release date on, or after, January 1, 2013 there’s no eligibility end date.

In-State Tuition: Non-resident students who start classes in-person at UW-Madison using VR&E will be charged equal to the in-state tuition rate until the completion of their program, even if they exhaust their benefit. However, students who don’t remain continuously enrolled (take a break longer than two semesters) will be assessed the non-resident tuition rate when they return. You can view current tuition rates on the Bursar’s Office website.
