Can I Study Abroad using Benefits?
It might be possible to use your education benefits to pay for study abroad, but due to state and federal benefit policies, navigating this process can prove difficult and education benefits cannot be used on certain study abroad programs and will not cover certain program fees and expenses. However, our office is here to help you navigate the intricacies of using education benefits for studying abroad. We strongly recommend that students considering using benefits to pay for study abroad set up an appointment with our office to discuss if or how education benefits can be used for their chosen program before accepting their spot into that program. Since the planning process for using education benefits to study abroad can take time, we recommend that students considering using education benefits to study abroad begin planning 1 year in advance of the term they would like to study abroad. While it may sound like studying abroad using benefits is impossible, it is not, and our office is here to help you navigate those state and federal rules and regulations to help you get where you want to go!

Studying Abroad at UW-Madison
To learn more about study abroad, we encourage you to review the study abroad website.
International Academic Programs (IAP) is the central study abroad office on campus. Specialized programs and advising are available to students in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and the Wisconsin School of Business. CALS, engineering, and business students are encouraged to meet with study abroad staff in their school or college. You can find who your study abroad advisor is in the Contacts tab of any program page.
This is an accordion element with a series of buttons that open and close related content panels.
Step 1: Search for "Exchange & Direct Enroll" programs.
Students can view study abroad programs through the Program Search tool on the study abroad website.
In the left-hand filter column, you will scroll down to the Structure section and check the box, “Exchange & Direct Enroll.” If you have other specific filters you would like to include such as country/region, language of instruction, or duration, you can add these filters at this time.
In the list of programs that populate from this search, you should look for programs with the word “Exchange” in the program title. Not all programs that populate will have the word Exchange in the title. Exchange programs are the most likely to allow students to use education benefits.
You should also confirm with your study abroad advisor that the program(s) you are interested in are exchange programs.
You can find the contact information for the Enrollment Manager, Study Abroad Advisor, and Financial Specialist assigned to each study abroad program in the “Contacts” section of the program page.
Step 2: Set up an appointment with a UVS team member.
When you find a program or list of programs you are interested in, please set up an appointment with a member of our team to discuss how and if your education benefits can be used to pay for part of the program.
You can set up an appointment through Starfish, or contact our office. To expedite the process, please email the program or list of programs you are interested in to our office.
Step 3: Set up an appointment with a study abroad advisor and academic advisor.
You should also speak with a study abroad advisor about your intended program(s), the overall program experience, academics, housing, health/safety, identity abroad, scholarships and additional funding, and more. You can set up an appointment with a study abroad advisor through Starfish or by emailing the study abroad advisor listed in the Contact section of the program(s) you are interested in.
Additionally, we recommend students set up an appointment with their academic advisors to ensure that their academic and graduation plans remain on track.
Step 4: Apply for your chosen program and scholarships.
Once you have spoken with our office, your academic advisor, study abroad advisor, and decided to go forward with your intended program you should apply for your program.
NOTE: If you plan to apply for IAP or external scholarships/grants be aware of their deadlines. Many scholarship/grant deadlines are before your program application deadline, so it is normal to be applying for funding before or during your application to your program.
Step 5: Reconfirm with UVS before accepting your spot.
Once accepted into your program you will generally have about a 2-week window to accept your spot in the program. In that time we strongly recommend you reach out to our office and reconfirm that you can use your education benefits to assist with the costs of your study abroad program.
We also recommend you take that time to reconfirm with your study abroad advisor when you will register for courses and what courses are offered. You should also reconfirm with your academic advisor that your degree progression is on course.
Funding Your Program
Even if a program allows students to use education benefits to help pay for the program, in most cases it will not cover all expenses and education benefits will not cover certain program fees and costs. Various additional financial aid, scholarships, and grant opportunities are available for students to apply for to help with the cost of study abroad programs.
Each UW-Madison study abroad program provides a “Cost Details” sheet breaking down the different fees and estimated expenses for the program. In your appointment with our office, we can discuss which costs and expenses can potentially be covered by education benefits and which costs will not. In your appointment with a study abroad advisor, students can discuss additional funding opportunities and their deadlines.
Students can find information about additional funding for study abroad programs on the study abroad website.
